The US Government has approved the sale to Romania of four M88A2 Hercules recovery vehicles produced by BAE Systems.

„We are ready to support the US government in the potential Foreign Military Sale of these M88A2 HERCULES Recovery Vehicles, which means we are closer to providing Romania with a path for single vehicle, unified recovery, and the capabilities needed to maintain and support its expanding vehicle fleet”, confirmed BAE Systems to DenfeseRomania.

With a 70-tonne recovery system, the M88A2 can recover any heavy armoured vehicle including the M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank, which is also included in the approved sale.

As a reminder, Romania will purchase 54 upgraded, in-service Abrams tanks and 12 derived, in-service tank chassis from the US Army inventory, including ammunition and training boosters.

The tanks will be in the M1A2 SEPv3 version.

According to data provided this month by the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) to DefenseRomania, during a press briefing, deliveries of the 54 Abrams tanks will start in 2026.

The estimated value of the contract is around $1.07 billion, in line with the prior approval of the Romanian Parliament.
