Romanian president spoke about the renewal of NATO and the importance of an Eastern European leader in the leadership structures of the most powerful military defence alliance in history.
"NATO needs a renewed perspective on its mission. Eastern Europe has a valuable contribution to make to the discussions and decisions taken within NATO. With balanced, strong and influential representation, the Alliance will be able to make the best decisions that meet the needs and concerns of its member states.
I have decided to compete for the post of NATO Secretary General. I assume this candidacy on behalf of Romania.
This decision is based on Romania's performance, the experience gained during my two presidential terms, the deep understanding of the challenges facing NATO, Europe and especially our region", said Klaus Iohannis.
Mark Ruttte remains the favourite?
The Romanian President's decision to enter the race is most likely based on support from Central and Eastern European countries.
Until now, former Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was the only candidate being discussed, especially as Rutte also has the backing of the major Western states. The United States, Great Britain, France and Germany have expressed their support for him.
But the appointment of NATO's secretary-general requires the consensus of member states.
The alliance's current secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg, will finish his term in October 2024, having already had it extended four times in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
